“I should have an older brother,” the girl said.

“I’ll be your older brother,” he told her, knowing what she’d done wrong but not blaming.

“I’m the first.”

“I’ll do it anyway.”

“I was wrong to think I could go there,” she told him.

“Then don’t go.”

“It’s too late. There are no trap doors.”

“Tell her I sent her a birthday present. It’s an envelope with a necklace in it. Tell her you have to wait for the mail to come. Just tell her you can’t go because you’re waiting for a present from me. She’ll like that. She likes presents.”
